Leo Smit — pianist, composer, photographer and friend of most of the huge crowd that overflowed Baird Hall on Sunday — got the kind of memorial tribute he would have wanted. It was all of a rather intimate, chamber nature but in widely varying instrumentation, and it concluded with a recording of Smit playing "Zero Hour" by Pete Johnson. The famed jazz pianist had retired, quite ill, to Buffalo, and Smit had taken up his cause in 1963 with a series of benefit concerts.
