Even though Brubeck's mother was a piano teacher, it seemed for a time that he was more likely to follow in his father's footsteps and take up cattle ranching. His talent as a pianist did bring the teenager down off his horse for work in dance bands. Fats Waller and Billy Kyle were his favorites - but he had also studied at Mills College with composer Darius Mihaud, and from the outset Brubeck's approach was unique.
