Stringing the audience along
Herman Trotter

The tour de force of the evening was Charles Wuorinen's 1992 Saxophone Quartet played by the Amherst Saxophone Quartet. Forte chords and fragments of wandering lyric impulse kept pouring out, each part often seeming to make sense on its own but not as an ensemble, which fitted together very uneasily for long stretches, then unexpectedly lapsed into easy coherence for a while. The general character of the music, forcefully hurled out by the players, was extremely, almost angrily aggressive, edgy and harsh, with the soprano often up in the shrill summit of the instrument's register. The termpo, steady for the most part, crept slowly up to a molto allegro as the final punched chord approached.
