This is the first article of several on ways to help your ensemble by learning the arts of fundraising.
Find a cause you care about deeply and join a not-for-profit organization that works in that area. You will feel good about the volunteer work you do, and in the process you'll learn how an NFP works and make some great connections in your community. Generally, a Board Member is someone who can help an organization by:
- Giving money
- Getting money from others
- Giving services (in our case, performances)
- Giving special expertise (accounting, legal, musical, technical)
- Giving our time (working on projects, etc.)
Early in our career, the ASQ volunteered to perform free for fundraisers for local organizations. Some of the Board Members adopted us and began to teach us how to form our own not-for-profit corporation. Some of them even joined our board after a few years and became some of our best contributors.
